September – November 2023
In early 2022, the Dan River Basin Association (DRBA) received funding from the NC Land and Water Fund (NCLWF) to create a plan aimed at improving water quality in the Dan River Basin, restoring riparian buffers and habitats, conserving land, and enhancing river access and recreation. DRBA partnered with PTRC and the Piedmont Conservation Council to engage diverse stakeholders, including new partners and local governments, to address water quality issues in the Dan River watersheds of Rockingham and Caswell counties.
The project covers the Upper and Lower Dan River, from the Stokes/Rockingham County line to the Virginia border, including major tributaries like the Mayo River, Matrimony Creek, Smith River, Cascade Creek, Hogan’s Creek, and Country Line Creek. It also encompasses Mayo River State Park, Dan River GameLand, and R. Wayne Bailey – Caswell GameLands. Municipalities involved include Madison, Mayodan, Eden, Wentworth, Reidsville, Yanceyville, and Danville, VA, many of which depend on the Dan River for drinking water.
