2013
A portion of the Chatham County Comprehensive Conservation Plan was implemented in Pittsboro, NC. This project was aimed at developing, enhancing, and supporting sustainable urban and community forestry programs throughout NC by promoting citizen and community involvement.
The two-year project began on October 1, 2013. PCC contracted with Biocenosis, LLC to carry out the project, with PCC providing grant administration services. Biocenosis, LLC performed the following tasks:
- Created a local-scale GIS database to prioritize natural resources.
- Educated the local community and encouraged stakeholder participation.
- Coordinated with project partners and Town staff.
- Finalized the documentation process as a case study.
Task 1 included a standalone GIS database featuring relevant layers, conservation ranking, and analysis of biodiversity and wildlife habitat at the municipal level, along with mapping to prioritize forestland, farmland, wildlife habitat, and potential connectivity. Task 2, consisted of a public forum website and a series of at least two public meetings were held in Pittsboro. Final documentation included any GIS layers developed throughout the project, which were incorporated into the County Online Mapper for public access.
