Quickfacts:
- This project involved relocating 335 linear feet of Black Creek along the Whittington Park Townhomes, creating a new, meandering stream channel with natural habitat features, floodplain connection, and a more natural hydrologic regime, while re-vegetating and protecting the former streambed from future erosion.
- The completed project restored a more natural streambed, profile, and alignment, improving resilience to urban runoff.
- The stream restoration will reduce sediment load by 78.32 tons/year.
January 2021 – June 2024
This project will restore 335 linear feet of damaged urban stream, re-creating a natural, meandering stream with riffles and pools, while connecting it to a 0.39-acre floodplain for water quality benefits and erosion protection. Native riparian and wetland plantings will be installed. The project aims to improve aquatic habitats, eliminate streambank erosion and sedimentation, restore floodplain connectivity, and protect adjacent infrastructure. Funding will be used for project implementation, with design, permitting, and bidding already completed.
