Greensboro Spring Oak

Quickfacts:

  • Objectives of the restoration project were to:
    • Establish a New & Stable Channel: The new channel will incorporate in-stream structures and create a floodplain on both sides of the channel.
    • Improve Water Quality: By reducing sedimentation and promoting more natural stream processes.
    • Mitigate Erosion: Remove the erosive threat from the residential properties adjacent to the northern streambank.

October 2024 – Present

The Greensboro Spring Oak project is working to relocate and restore a badly eroding portion of Horsepen Creek. This creek was highly degraded due to increased urbanization of the watershed, climate change influencing peak flows and durations of storms, and inadequate bank and buffer vegetation resulting in unstable banks. The completed project will restore and stabilize 370 feet of stream, and protect 175 feet of sewer and 4 residential properties. Naturalized stream habitat features will improve the habitat for aquatic life and address documented declines.
